We had such fun over the weekend. Saturday some of the girls went for ice cream before heading to the women's lacrosse game at UNC, many of them won tee shirts and other prizes. That evening we hosted the "chocolate cake battle". The American girls made their cake following a recipe in French, while the Belgians followed one in English. Both were delicious! The evening ended outdoors by the fire. Sunday was Easter ... more chocolate!! Can't wait for them to get back tonight and hear the stories of their adventures in Virginia.catelerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12307589456528070300noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5269893996506370872.post-39107734843206883232012-04-09T10:11:18.976-05:002012-04-09T10:11:18.976-05:00It has been wonderful having Manon with us and mee...It has been wonderful having Manon with us and meeting the students and teachers. The girls have kept busy ice skating, horseback riding and going shopping, to the movies, and to the beach. I wish that our Beligum friends could stay with us longer, the time is going by too fast!

Kim Boggessnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5269893996506370872.post-60547676360160387452012-04-09T09:31:13.397-05:002012-04-09T09:31:13.397-05:00This has been such a wonderful experience! We spent lots of time practicing how to say different things around the house in French as we were really nervous about how well we would communicate. All of our fears were allayed, when Min-Thu arrived! Her English is great, and Jaryn's french is better than she gave herself credit for!
Wednesday morning we whisked the girls away to Washington D.C. along with Hannah and her pen pal Tara. Albeit a little rough at first, the Belgian girls rolled with it, and we were off! A four 1/2 hour car ride was filled with chatting and laughing - and the first sign that things were going to be GREAT!
We were excited to share the White House, Treasury Building, and Submarine Sandwiches with our guests. After checking into the hotel, we had their first ride on the Metro, off to a Mediteranian dinner in Foggy Bottom and then an evening walk to the Lincoln Memorial and both the WWII and Vietnam Memorials. It was a beautiful evening, and all the girls enjoyed taking in the sites including the Washington Monument lit up! Our girls enjoyed sharing with their pen pals how the monuments are on the back of American currency.

Thursday morning after enjoying a huge american buffet, we headed out to the Natural History Museum, walked around the National Mall, made wishes at Yoko Ono's wishing tree, rode the carousel, enjoyed lots of sculptures at the Hirshorn and then hopped on the metro to Farragut Square for a farm to table lunch at Founding Farmers. Afterwards we walked to Georgetown for some shopping. Then, we hopped on the bus to the Kennedy Center for some live Rock and Roll. The girls even got to meet the trumpet player after the show. After a little lesson on John F. Kennedy, we took in the views on the Kennedy Center terrace. Next, the metro back to the Smithsonian where we took in an outdoor exhibit on the Hirschhorn Bldg. While we tried to explain it was art - American and Belgium girl's thought differently. We took the metro back to the hotel and all the kids slept soundly that night!

Friday morning we checked out of the hotel and spent the day at the Zoo. Pandas, Gorillas, Big Cats - it was a beautiful day.

Unfortunately we hit lots of traffic on the way home so we were stuck in the car for quite awhile. This didn't bother the girls at all. They covered every possible subject from music, boys, facebook, clothes, gossip at school, home life. You name it, it was discussed in English and French. The girls bonded so beautifully on this part of their trip -- and it is clear to me that life long friendships have been made!Aye Ayes United!https://www.blogger.com/profile/15730414986635112773noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5269893996506370872.post-30640459816265519702012-04-09T09:05:00.614-05:002012-04-09T09:05:00.614-05:00Truly enjoyed a night at a Durham Bulls game Frida...Truly enjoyed a night at a Durham Bulls game Friday (great to run into Grace Baldauf (and familY) and her guest Sarah Roberty at the game. It went long and it was chilly, but fireworks after the game were great. Saturday, we headed to the beach -- also chilly, but Harrison and his guest Robin Bigaranya still went swimming. Have fun in Williamsburg -- we'll see you Tuesday night.Randy Younghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09014084525157923216noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5269893996506370872.post-8698528769116754672012-04-08T18:09:18.160-05:002012-04-08T18:09:18.160-05:00We are having a lovely time with your guest.
